Non-Binary — really?
Yesterday I had a longer discussion with the daughter of our friends who defines herself as non-binary. I can’t have these discussions with many people but she is really working hard on informing others and is prepared to listen to other points of views.
Let’s leave aside my question to her: “Is your generation and group open to hear how our (older) generation of heterosexuals feel about this topic…at all?”
Both her and her gay uncle, a good friend of ours, were silent for a few moments when I asked that question. But as I said, let’s leave this for now.
A more interesting point crossed my mind. The feminine of a (naturally born) woman.
Out of curiosity I googled if the percentage of girls who identify as non-binary is higher than that of boys. For the love of me I couldn’t find any stats at all. Instead only websites about how to accept your non-binary child. ‘Yeah, yeah, I get it.’
What was behind that curiosity…
It was the impression that girls these days are really afraid of being or becoming a woman.
Especially here in the UK (and this is just my observation), there aren’t many truly feminine and relaxed women who could be good role models, especially in the poorer areas.
